GBP1 million compensation for injuries sustained in fatal accident
A Hertfordshire woman has been awarded more than GBP1 million in compensation at the High Court following a car crash that claimed the life of her boyfriend.
Neil Sullivan was driving on the A418 in Thame, Oxfordshire in 1999 when he lost control of his car. Passenger Tizzy Ellattaoui, who was aged 24 at the time of the accident, suffered catastrophic injuries and is now looked after 24 hours a day in a care home near her home in Hamel Hampstead.
She was left barely aware of the world around her and was, at best, in a minimal consciousness state the High Court was told. Following a hearing in May 2008, the court awarded Ms Ellattaoui a lump sum of £750,000 and an index-linked GBP73,000 a year for life.
Through her mother, Houria El-Nahas of Highfield, Hemel Hempstead, Ms Ellattaoui sued her boyfriend's estate and the Motor Insurers Bureau, the body which compensates victims of uninsured drivers.
Approving the settlement, Mr Justice Maddison said that any action in which a claimant suffers such catastrophic injuries as these is bound to impact on many people's lives.
